How far is one working chip from a viable production line?
Work backward from a die that passed test. How many others passed on that wafer? Who qualified the machinery? Was the line under financial pressure before an interruption?

A corrected mask still needs light on the wafer
The target is an L on a wafer. The HOPE talk explains why the mask needs a corrected geometry. The ASML report follows the light through a vacuum and multiple mirrors before it reaches the wafer. These stages can fail independently: computing the mask does not establish that enough light will arrive reliably. And one well-formed test feature still leaves the question of repeatability across the next lot.

you'd think I'd put that L shape on a mask. That shape is numerically determined, basically calculated in a supercomputer.the entire process has to happen in a vacuumonly about 5% of the photons reach the actual waferWhich milestone did the purchase actually reach?
After an equipment purchase, draw the missing milestones: installation, qualification, a production run, testing and delivery. The Russian fab history distinguishes plans to buy used tools from dates when lines opened. The East German account adds another gap: the technology a procurement organization could obtain might differ from what the fab needed. Work backward from the process step before marking a purchase as evidence of capacity.

Finding a working chip in a product establishes that a functioning specimen was made. In his account of SMIC, Asianometry asks what fraction of the dies meet specification. Rejected dies still consumed wafer area and processing steps. A claim of economical production needs yield, volume and cost per good die alongside the physical specimen.

is it **economically** competitive without EUV?Yield, meaning they can be used and also perform to spec. The 90 nanometer production line launched in 2012Did the constraint begin on the day of the fire?
The fire at India’s SCL gives the history a clear date. The speaker also identifies earlier financial strain and uncertainty about ignition. Try a counterfactual: list the equipment and work specifically required to recover from the fire, then the expenditure needed to stay competitive even without it. The two lists separate a major loss from longer-running constraints.

Friedman’s pencil connects people supplying wood, graphite and other inputs without requiring them to know one another. The East German fab account adds another dependency: someone must know how to integrate the acquired item into a local process. Add a verb to every piece of transferred hardware: who calibrates it, detects a deviation and repairs it? Work missing from a packing list can still determine delivery time.

In the Japanese semiconductor history, a transistor radio worked before its product and process were ready for public sale. The later discussion of yield changes the unit from one demonstration to a batch of parts. To compare production lines, also match the type of chip and the pass criteria. Two percentages can otherwise represent different tests.
